Subject: MS 150 Bike Tour--inspiration
Cyclists sure do persevere! For those of
you who have participated in the MS 150 Bike Tour, you may remember
some scary and memorable events:
1989: Hurriance Hugo forced a delay of
three weeks and a change to a one-day tour at Carowinds.
1994: Non-stop rain on Saturday, tornado
in the afternoon made us hold cyclists (or at least attempt to)
at rest stops
1999: Hurricane Floyd flooded the Day Two
route so all cyclists rode to Florence and back to Rockingham
on Sunday (who knew it would be so hilly!?)
2001: Cyclists are concerned about participating
in the event so shortly after the attacks on 9/11
2004: Hurricane Ivan scares everyone into
thinking the tour should be cancelled. Fortunately, the weather
was phenomenal!
And that is just our chapter! Who knows
what 2005 will bring? What we do know is that the MS 150 Bike
Tour and its cyclists nationwide are resilient and strong. As
a matter of fact, Louisiana cyclists are already seeking an MS
150 Bike Tour to attend since their tour will not take place
the first weekend of October. We have, of course, have invited
them to join us.
In times like this, we all do the best
we can to take care of our neighbor and lend a helping hand.
The National MS Society has been serving people in shelters across
the country who have MS and have been evacuated. We stand ready
to assist people with MS in the long-term: housing, employment,
counseling, medication, medical equipment and more. The American
Red Cross and Salvation Army have done a great job of providing
relief during the crisis phase. We will be called upon more than
ever during the recovery and rebuilding phase for people with
MS. To do this, we need to make sure that events like the MS
150 Bike Tour are successful.
Please share this information with your
sponsors. Ask them to consider supporting both the relief efforts
and the National MS Society. Times are toughbut the citizens
of the United States are tougher!
Together, we can make a difference in the
lives of people with MS today and those who will be diagnosed
tomorrow. We need you! Thank you for participating and making
the MS 150 Bike Tour what it is. See you in two weeks if not
before!
Warmly,
Anne Marie McDermott
